Paving in McCleary
Asphalt paving in McCleary serves a compact town with deep timber roots. Henry McCleary arrived in 1897 and built two sawmills and a door manufacturing company, then sold the land and companies to Simpson Logging Company on December 31, 1941. The town incorporated in January 1943. It covers about 2 square miles at 272 feet, and it grew 20.8 percent between 2010 and 2020, from 1,653 to 1,997 residents.
Older homes and patched driveways
Much of McCleary's housing dates to its mill-town years. Driveways on older lots may be narrow, patched several times, or still gravel. We replace worn-out driveways on a rebuilt base, convert gravel drives to asphalt, and patch and seal where the existing pavement is still sound.
Water and culverts
Middle Fork Wildcat Creek runs through the city, and a fish-passage project there removed three culverts and opened more than four miles of habitat. Creeks, culverts and ditches affect where water goes on a property. Before we pave a driveway that crosses or runs beside a ditch, we check the culvert and make sure the new surface does not block drainage or send water where it should not go.
A wet climate
McCleary sits between Olympia and the Grays Harbor coast, where rainfall increases quickly heading west. We build driveways with careful grading and a solid base so water drains off, and we schedule paving and sealing for the drier months.
Permits
If your driveway project changes where it meets a public street, check with the City of McCleary or Grays Harbor County first. We raise it at the estimate.
Upkeep
Crack sealing before the fall rains and sealcoating every few years in dry weather are the most cost-effective ways to keep a driveway in good condition here.
Pricing a small-town job
Paving contractors often have a minimum charge, so very small jobs cost more per square foot. Combining work, such as paving a driveway and patching a shop apron at the same visit, can make better use of that minimum. We are happy to quote options.

McCleary Questions
Can you pave over a ditch crossing?
We check the culvert first. If it is undersized or damaged, it should be addressed before paving so water keeps flowing.
Do you take small driveway jobs?
Yes, though like most paving contractors we have a minimum charge.
How often should I sealcoat?
Every few years, in dry weather, after cracks are filled.
