Paving in a River Town

Asphalt paving in Bucoda is small-scale work in a town with a big history. Bucoda covers about six-tenths of a square mile along the Skookumchuck River, at about 246 feet of elevation, and counted 600 residents in the 2020 census. Sawmills were running on the river by 1857. Washington's first territorial prison, the Seatco prison, opened here in 1878 and held more than 300 prisoners before closing by 1890. Later, the Mutual Lumber Mill earned the town the nickname "The Little Town with the Million Dollar Payroll."

River-bottom ground

Towns built along rivers often sit on mixed soils: sandy and gravelly in some spots, silty and wet in others. Bucoda lots near the Skookumchuck can hold water in winter, and that is exactly what softens a driveway base. On every job here we probe for soft areas, check where runoff goes, and grade the new surface so water drains off and away from the house and garage. In low spots we recommend more crushed rock under the asphalt.

Older homes and patched driveways

Much of Bucoda's housing is older, and many driveways have been patched for years or are still gravel. If a driveway is mostly patches, replacement tends to be the better investment. If it is gravel, a conversion to asphalt starts with regrading and compacting the existing rock and adding more where it is thin.

Keeping repairs in proportion

In a small town, not every job needs to be a full rebuild. Sealing cracks, patching a few failed areas, or paving only the most-used part of a drive can make sense. We give you a written quote with options so you can choose what fits.

Permits near the street

If your project changes where your driveway meets a public street, check with the Town of Bucoda before work starts. We raise it at the estimate so the schedule allows for it. For properties outside town limits, Thurston County calls a new or relocated driveway connecting to a county road an encroachment, which needs a county permit.

Timing

The Skookumchuck valley shares the South Sound's wet winters. Paving goes best in the warm, dry part of the year, and crack sealing before the fall rains helps any driveway last longer.

What a Bucoda estimate covers

We measure, check where water stands, probe the soft spots and look at the street edge. The quote lists each part of the work with its price, and we include options if a partial job makes more sense.

Bucoda Questions

My Bucoda driveway floods in winter. Can new asphalt fix that?

Asphalt alone will not, but regrading and a thicker rock base can. We look at where water collects and shape the new surface so it drains away.

Can you pave just part of my driveway?

Yes. We can pave the section that gets the most use and leave the rest for later.

Do you take small jobs?

Yes. Patching, crack sealing and small driveways are a regular part of our work, though most paving contractors have a minimum charge.
